Map / Panoramic tour through the Val Venegia
Away from any hustle and bustle, the panoramic tour through the Val Venegia in San Martino Castrozza awaits us with a beautiful and panoramic tour, which can also be classified as easy in terms of fitness for "dolomitic" conditions.

San Martino di Castrozza is rather unknown as a destination for a biking holiday. Of course, this is not due to a lack of touring opportunities, but merely because there are a few biking regions along the way. However, if you make the effort and travel to the valley between the Pala Group and the Lagorai range, you will be rewarded with a unique biking destination. Geologically, the region is divided into two biking areas, which have completely different characteristics depending on the side of the valley. From walled mule trails through moon-like limestone landscapes to old military trails in deserted areas, you will find a wide range of mountain bike tours in San Martino di Castrozza. However, it should be noted that the infrastructure for mountain bikers is very rudimentary. Thus, the region around San Martino can be considered "mountain bike friendly" rather than a fully developed "mountain bike destination". The panoramic tour through the Val Venegia, with 630 metres of ascent, is one of the easier tours in the Dolomites in terms of physical condition. However, you should bear in mind that the partly loose ground requires a lot of energy. Once you have overcome the ascent, you are rewarded with an easy, predominantly flowing trail. You can almost always enjoy the view from the Val Venegia valley to the peaks of the Pale di San Martino.

Author’s recommendation

The Alps, especially the Dolomites, were also a theatre of the First World War. Here, Italian and Austrian troops fought bloody battles. Some of the battles took place at altitudes of up to 3,900 metres and were strongly characterised by the impassable mountain landscape.   The battle line stretched completely through South Tyrol over a length of 360 kilometres. In order to be able to supply the front with sufficient troops and material, both sides first had to open up this unreal landscape sufficiently. For this purpose, a large number of military paths were created, which are still part of many tours in this region today thanks to professional development and painstaking restoration work.
