Cristo Pensante (winter)
APT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero e Vanoi Verified partner Explorers Choice
The “Trekking del Cristo Pensante” (Trekking of the Thinking Christ) is one of the most classic itineraries in the Primiero area in both the summer and winter seasons. The views of the Peaks, with the northern sector of the Pala Group in the foreground, make this loop tour one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites
Once you reach Baita Segantini, continue along the first stretch of road which soon joins a very well signposted path which, through some ups and downs, goes around Cima Costazza (2,282 m asl) on its eastern side. In this stretch you will come across some emplacements and tunnels, leftovers from the First World War, still kept in good condition. After a further short uphill stretch, you thus reach the top of Mount Castellazzo (2,333 m asl), where the statue of the Thinking Christ is located.
For the descent, follow the same route as for the ascent.
NB: in winter, to avoid further dangerous crossings of the ski slopes of the Castellazzo ski area, the path that descends from the top of Cima Castellazzo towards Capanna Cervino on the north-western side of the mountain is to be avoided.
Author’s recommendation
The statue was sculpted by Paolo Lauton, and in 2009 was placed on the Castelàz, a mountain excluded from the hiking scene until then. It was carved from a single block of white Predazzo marble (Predazzite). Worthy of note is the statue’s crown, made of barbed wire from the First World War.

Tips and hints
